children's book illustration

Who keeps sneaking big bites from Ari Rae’s campfire meals and treats? Is it the work of a bear? Or is the culprit some other critter?

I haven’t been writing much lately, but I wanted to share this one. I looked into self-publishing this as a book, but determined that whole endeavor a scam. The only ones who appear to ever make any money from such ventures are the publishers, editors, cover designers, etc. Most writers who venture into such ventures just end up in a financial hole.

So, what I did was have my wife turn it into a Shutterfly book. I had five copies made for my children and grandchildren.  It’s now one of the most frequently requested bedtime tales on their shelf.

So, for anyone who wishes, please feel free to download it and have a Shutterfly copy made for children and grandchildren.  Consider it a gift from one lifelong Adirondack Outlaw soul.

I hope many young Adirondack kids out there enjoy it.

  1. Wonderful creative stuff Dick. That Ari Rae is one lucky granddaughter to have you as her very own artist/story teller in residence! Thanks for sharing your “Campfire Bears” with all of us. Please keep up the good work and stay well.

P.S. I bumped into TV reporter Jack LaDuke in Saranac Lake the other day, and we had a wonderful chin-wag remembering our shared memories of DEC people (like your dad) and local events from times gone by.

    1. Thank you, Mr. Curth. I run into Jack myself quite frequently when I am in town. He’s usually out walking his dog on days I spend time sitting in Triangle Park across the street from my boyhood home, taking in some nutrition, reminiscing & napping between river bottle dives. I missed seeing him last Thursday though, when I was in town. Glad to know he is still actively out and about. He & I always chitchat a bit too. Most likely about much the same stuff.

  2. I vividly remember one camping trip at BRB. My buddy and I set up our 2 man tent
next to a tree, that we used to secure our tarp over our rain fly.

The next morning there was a humongous dump at the base of the tree. We didn’t
hear a thing that night. After that we laughed all day, envisioning that bear scratching his back on the tree as he made that contribution to our week at our favorite site.

  3. What a fantastic idea and a very generous offer! Your insights on the self-publishing world are spot on and will surely help other aspiring writers. But turning it into a cherished Shutterfly book for your family is the most authentic kind of success—that it’s a bedtime favorite speaks volumes! Thank you for sharing this gift from your ‘Adirondack Outlaw soul’ with the rest of us. I’m excited to read it and share the adventure.
