I’m not a downhill skier but I’ve long been familiar with the “Iceface” moniker many use to refer to our beloved Whiteface Mountain.
We ran a story on the Explorer’s website this week about complaints that have been piling up from Whiteface skiers and former ski patrol members, about poor conditions at the mountain. Run by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), it appears that managers are paying attention. ORDA CEO Ashley Walden has brought in outside help to oversee operations.
Let’s hear from you: Do you see a decline in trail conditions or just a rough few years for snowmaking?
IMO as a long time pass holder, this year is not a whole lot different form most others. The unusually mild winter weather has made the conditions for snowmaking and grooming more challenging than normal. Overall I think WF has done a pretty good job this year all things considered.
Maybe someone who downhill ski’s should be in charge of researching and writing whatever upcoming article comes out of this. Sorry Melissa.
I came down Whiteface from the half way point on cross country skies with no edges doing telemark turn practice as a Forest Ranger. Gary Hodgson and I went back to the kiddy hill after surviving the trip down on ice. Petre fish lost a ski on the big hill which went down across the parking lot into the river. Never did get to make a telemark turn that day.
