Lake Effect Life
I’ve lived primarily in two places during my life, Saranac Lake and Watertown, New York. On any given day, from October through May, one or the other is either the coldest or snowiest place in the lower 48. Sometimes both.
When I say the term “Lake Effect,” North Country folks know exactly what I’m talkin’ about. Especially those hardy souls who live & work along the Adirondack Park’s western Tug Hill Plateau Blue Line boundary.
As we head into 2023’s winter holiday snow season, I thought I’d share a flashback to last year’s Christmas storm mayhem. For the full story, click the link & read on.

Comment to “Lake Effect Life”. I live 30 miles southeast of Buffalo and in most cases, we measure snowfall by the foot and not by the inch. So, I can relate to Dick’s article. It is life in lake effect country. Fire up the snowblower and put another log in the wood burner! Happy winter all.
The Lake Effect is a challenge but not as dramatic as you portray. Living in Truckee, or most higher elevation mountain towns in the Rocky Mt. west makes the Lake Effect the equivalent of child’s play.
